Let's make it
Instructions.
- 1
Print the Halloween Potion Lab pack: Pick Your Potion, Potion Recipe Cards, Create Your Own Potion, and Potion Lab Challenge.
- 2
Choose a potion from the menu: Witch's Brew, Ghost Fizz, Frog Slime, Bat Bubble Brew, Pumpkin Pop, or Spider Surprise.
- 3
Follow the matching recipe card: 2 scoops of baking soda, 3 drops of the listed food coloring, then add vinegar.
- 4
Watch it bubble, fizz, ooze, or pop — each recipe card has its own cue.
- 5
Use the Create Your Own Potion page to name a potion, choose scoops, drops, and a color, then draw what happened.
- 6
Try a Potion Lab Challenge, such as comparing 1 scoop vs 2 scoops, mixing two colors, or pouring vinegar slowly and then quickly.
Safety tip
- Adult supervision is required. Baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring are not for eating and shouldn't be put in the mouth.
Field Notes
- Mess + Staining Note: Food coloring can stain hands, clothing, floors, countertops, and some containers. Stains on hands may take a few washes with soap and water to fade. We recommend doing this activity outside when possible, covering your work surface, and wearing clothes you don't mind getting messy. Use containers you don't mind staining.
- Parent tip: The recipe cards all use the same base (baking soda + vinegar) with a different food-coloring color. The challenge page is there when kids want to compare amounts, mix colors, or change how they pour.
